Topic/RQ: Analysis of interaction effects of individual media use and social networks. To what extend and how is individual media use affected by the social network of recipients? To what extend and how is the social network affected by individual media use?

Theory: Development of a systematic framework to combine long standing theories with respect to the interpersonal context of mass media use and effects (two step flow of Communication, uses and gratifications, agenda setting, spiral of silence, knowledge gap). Explanation of individual behavior based on psychological theories (uncertainty reduction theory, social norms, exchange theory, balance theory, social comparison, cognitive dissonance, social identity and self categorization, dynamic social impact theory, uniqueness theory) and their effect on social groups and the society based on sociological theories and social network analysis (co-orientation, selection, influence)

Empirical setting: 5 wave panel survey in 36 school classes (app. 900 students of different school levels 13-16 years old)
