I am a Professor of Media and Communication Research at the University of Zurich (IKMZ) and head of the division Media Use & Effects. My fields of research and teaching are media use and media effects, health communication campaigns, and social network analysis.

I serve as Editor-in-Chief for the European Journal of Health Communication (EJHC) and as head of the challenge area "Communication" of the Digital Society Initiative (DSI).

Previous affiliations include ETH Zurich (lecturer 2009 - 2019), Harvard University, Department of Sociology (visiting scholar 2016), the National Institutes of Health, National Human Genome Research Institute, Social and Behavioral Research Branch (visiting faculty 2016-17), and the Annenberg School for Communication (ASC) at the University of Pennsylvania (visiting scholar). From 2013 to 2016 I was a Professor for Media and Communication Research at the University of Bremen where I served as the Director of the Institute of Journalism, Communication, and Media Studies (IPKM), and as head of the (ZEMKI) Lab on Networked Communication. 2011-2012 I have served as a Professor for Public Communication at the Institute of Media, Knowledge, and Communication (imwk) at Augsburg University.

In 2012 I founded IaKom GmbH - a private research and consulting institute for applied communication research which has become a premium research and consulting institute in Switzerland.
